Since 1992, the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation has approved over $1.6 million in grants for research in three general categories.
- Basic and Applied Research. Pilot studies and larger research projects that investigate the cause of Niemann-Pick Disease and potential therapies. Grants for basic and applied research have been awarded since 1993.
- Clinical Research and Services. Studies or services to collect clinical data on the symptoms, progression, and prognosis of the disease. Clinical studies complement basic research by identifying areas to be investigated. Grants for clinical research and services have been awarded since 2001.
- Fellowships. Open to post-doctoral candidates who are beginning their careers, the Fellowships encourage young researchers to specialize in Niemann-Pick Disease. Grants for Fellowships were first awarded in 2003.
The Foundation funds research related to all forms of Niemann-Pick disease with grants awarded semi-annually. Grant applications are evaluated by an independent Scientific Advisory Board and the Board's Research Subcommittee.
