The NPC1 ProteinThe red lines show one NPC1 protein in an organelle membrane ( in gray). The NPC1 protein is anchored in the membrane. It cannot easily move or be replaced. The NPC1 gene was identified in 1997. By the end of 1999, researchers had identified the shape of the protein made by the gene, where it was located in the cell, and its likely function. This is a rapid advance in scientific knowledge, made more impressive by the fact that the NPC1 protein is of a type never before found in humans. The Cytosol (top) is the cellular fluid outside of the organelle. The Lumen (bottom) is the fluid inside the organelle. Thicker red lines are used to highlight specific parts of the protein but do not represent actual physical size.
